Upa! es grupo de rock originario de Santiago de Chile, formado en 1985, cuyo estilo era un new wave influenciado por el jazz rock. Sus integrantes son Pablo Ugarte (voz y bajo), SebastĆan Piga (guitarra, saxofĆ³n), Mario Planet (voz y guitarra) y Octavio BascuƱƔn (baterĆa).
Valioso emblema del pop trabajado en Chile durante los aƱos ’80, Upa! logrĆ³ no sĆ³lo demostrar mayor valor artĆstico que la serie de bandas que compitieron con ellos durante el llamado boom de la Ć©poca, sino tambiĆ©n establecerse como referente de un modo de composiciĆ³n de inequĆvoco espĆritu urbano. A diferencia de Los Prisioneros, el grupo optĆ³ por una reflexiĆ³n social mĆ”s sutil y metafĆ³rica, anclada de modo importante en la new-wave inglesa y con timbres novedosos, como el saxo de SebastiĆ”n Piga.
Con canciones como Ā«Ella lloraĀ», Ā«Cuando vuelvasĀ» y Ā«La bambaĀ», Upa! se convirtiĆ³ en uno de los grupos mĆ”s populares de esa dĆ©cada. Su planteamiento intentĆ³ mantenerse fiel a tres principios auto establecidos: Ā«Tocar bien, cantar inteligente y tener un estilo personalĀ». Luego de un largo receso, la banda volviĆ³ a los escenarios y la publicaciĆ³n discogrĆ”fica a fines de los aƱos ’90 con su misma formaciĆ³n original. Desde entonces se reĆŗnen de modo periĆ³dico, si bien sus integrantes privilegian sus actividades personales. Hoy Upa! Ha regresado para quedarse con un gran concierto en el teatro CaupolicĆ”n donde se reunieron mĆ”s 2500 fans que corearon sus Ć©xitos. El grupo aprovechĆ³ para mostrar parte de lo que serĆ” su 5Āŗ Ć”lbum de estudio que estĆ”n grabando con el ingeniero ingles Barry Sage ( Rolling Stones).

They became a emblematic Chilean pop band during the eighties and demonstrated a higher artistic talent among the large amount of bands that competed with them in the so called āboomā of those years. The band also set a new standard of social reference regarding their lyrics, when they differentiated from groups like Los Prisioneros etc, by choosing to do a more metaphoric and subtle approach of social reflection. They were deeply inspired by British new wave, and introduced different timbres into their music, like using SebastiĆ”n Pigaās saxophone for example.
With hit songs like āElla Lloraā, āCuando Vuelvasā and āLa Bambaā, Upa! became one of the most popular groups of the decade. Their outlook aimed to keep faithful to three simple principals: āplay good, sing smartly, and have a personal styleā.
After a long recess the band came back to the stage and released new music at the end of the nineties with the original formation. Since then, they reunite periodically. But in 2013 they returned to stay with a big concert at the CaupolicĆ”n Theater where a 2500 audience chanted their hits. The band have sinced showcased part of their 5th studio album that they are currently recording under Barry Sageās production. They already released their first single āRespiras por dosā and have appeared in the 2014 Lollapalooza Festival, and at several concerts throughout Chile.
